Gadolinium (Gd) is an essential rare earth element in contrast media, which is indispensable for the diagnosis of diseases by MRI scans in clinical practice around the world over 30 years. In the manufacturing process at each pharmaceutical production site, only Gd needs to be purified from the mineral ore, but it is very difficult to extract the pure Gd element in it. At present, some researchers have been pointed out that rare earth elements other than Gd may be contaminated as impurities in this process1). Therefore, in this study, we measured and compared the kind of rare earth elements except for Gd and the amount of them in the Gd based contrast agents (GBCAs) commercially available in Japan (Magnescope, gadobutrol, gadoteridol, gadoterate (generic), gadoteridol (generic)) by ICP-MS. Some rare earth elements except for Gd were detected in all of GBCAs. However, there are some differences in amount of the elements among GBCAs. Our data shows the same tendency (detected elements and quantity) as previous publication.
