Structural Analysis of EO-PO Copolymers Using LC-QTOF MS

Structural analysis of Ethylene oxide-propylene oxide (EO-PO) random copolymers and block copolymers was performed using LC-QTOF MS. EO-PO copolymer is one of copolymer type nonionic surfactants that combines hydrophilic EO and hydrophobic PO, and is used in various fields. The physical properties of EO-PO copolymers are controlled by the sequence of EO/PO, such as random copolymerization or block copolymerization.
Structural analysis of EO-PO copolymers has been performed by MALDI-TOFMS, including measuring molecular weight distribution and calculating the EO/PO composition ratio. In addition, the Kendrick Mass Defect (KMD) method has made it possible to easily visualize polymer series contained in complex mass spectra. However, MALDI-TOFMS has the problem that it is difficult to separate EO-PO copolymers with the same composition formula but different alkyl chain lengths, or to separate and analyze components with different sequence.
In this study, we used LC-QTOF MS to combine HPLC separation with structural analysis by MS/MS using a high-resolution mass spectrometer. A commercially available EO-PO copolymers (polyoxyethylene-polyoxypropylene alkyl ether) were used as samples. As a result, it was possible to distinguish random and block copolymers of EO-PO copolymers and to analyze their sequences.
