Enhancing Ion Introduction Efficiency with Two Types of Ion Deflection Electrodes in an Electrospray Ion Source

In electrospray ion sources (ESI) operating at high liquid flow rates, not only ions but also a significant number of insufficiently desolvated droplets are produced. When these droplets enter the vacuum region, they can contaminate the instrument and degrade its performance. To prevent this, conventional ESI ion sources typically adopt configurations aimed at blocking droplet intrusion, such as counter gas flow. However, this configuration also reduces ion introduction efficiency, resulting in decreased sensitivity.
To address this issue, we investigated methods utilizing electric fields under atmospheric pressure to deflect and guide ions into the vacuum region. In this study, we examined the configuration of an ion deflection electrode placed near the vacuum inlet through simulations and experimental assessment. The simulation results indicated that an effective electric field could be established using a configuration with two types of electrodes. Furthermore, experimental validation demonstrated a 3.3-fold increase in ion intensity for reserpine.
