This study introduces a novel method using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) combined with a Gas Exchange Device (GED) for real-time monitoring of airborne contamination in clean rooms used for extraterrestrial sample curation. The GED-ICP-MS method was tested in an ISO Class 7 clean room at JAXA, compared with the traditional impinger method, which collects particles over 24 hours. The GED-ICP-MS method provided higher time resolution, detecting particles every 60 seconds. Results showed that fine particles like manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), and potassium (K) were consistently detected, indicating potential contamination risks from materials used in clean room construction. These elements, particularly Mn and Fe, could interfere with the analysis of samples like those from asteroid Ryugu. The study highlights the importance of continuous environmental monitoring to prevent contamination and ensure the integrity of extraterrestrial sample analysis. The GED-ICP-MS/MS method offers a promising tool for real-time contamination detection, and future studies will refine it for improved monitoring and contamination prevention.
