In this work we investigate the applicability of a novel cyclic ion mobility-mass spectrometer for the analysis of complex materials, such as petroleum and synthetic polymers. The comprehensive characterization of these types of samples presents a significant challenge to analytical scientists due to the huge number of components present, including species differing by fractions of a Dalton, and isomeric species that cannot be separated by mass alone. The use of cyclic ion mobility spectrometry (cIMS) enabled the implementation of novel modes of operation that facilitated detailed analysis of crude oil fractions, and a co-polymer sample. Multiple passes of the cyclic device provided scaleable mobility separations that offered enhanced ion mobility resolution. Furthermore, a unique ‘slicing' approach enabled high resolution precursor ion selection, which provided greater selectivity for fragmentation experiments compared with typical selection using a quadrupole mass filter. These techniques allowed more detailed characterization of components in the petroleum sample and gave improved separation of overlapping species in the polymer sample.
