Analysis of trace elements in a single cell clarifies biological activities such as the differentiation process of Induced Pluripotent Stem (iPS) cell and pathogenesis of cancer. However, studies of trace elements in single cells have not been realized yet and it is behind in genome and protein analysis. In particular, there has been almost no report on measurement of cells in which metal elements have not been added or introduced. This is because there is no device that can analyze trace elements in single cells. This is due to the fact that since the cells are as small as several micrometers in diameter, the trace elements therein are very small in absolute amount even though the concentration is high. In our group, we have developed a Droplet Direct Injection Nebulizer (D-DIN) that injects a small droplet containing one cell directly into an ICP. In the presentation, the importance of trace element analysis in single cells and the development of new analytical devices such as microplasma sources will also be reported.
