We attempted imaging mass spectrometry to search for “pathogen lipids” and their localization in the liver and brain of a mouse model of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Macrophage aggregation detected by histopathological analysis was seen only in the liver of NASH model. The molecule of m/z 772.5 detected by imaging mass spectrometry was confirmed in conformity with the location of macrophage aggregation. In addition, the molecule of m/z 772.5 was increased in the brain of NASH mice. MSMS analysis suggested that the molecule of m/z 772.5 might be phospholipids including phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine. These localized pathogen lipids could express some physiological activity during NASH development. Our results also indicate that it is necessary to capture the NASH pathology not only in the liver but also in the whole body.
