The polymers will be degraded by the effects of light, oxygen, heat, etc. It is important to evaluate the chemical structure changes in polymer due to the degradations. In this presentation, we have investigated the ultraviolet (UV) degradation of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film focused on the surface using matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOFMS) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) microspectrometry. As a result, MALDI-TOFMS can confirm the early stage of degradation by analyzing the PET film surface directly. On the other hand, FT-IR microspectrometry can confirm the degree of degradation according to the UV irradiation time from the early stage.
