Studies on Radiation Damage to Biomolecules in Liquid Water Using Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry of Liquid Substance by Ion Beams

(Kyoto Univ.)
oHidetsugu Tsuchida

In this talk, the development of secondary ion mass spectrometry of liquid substances under vacuum using fast ion beams and its application to the study of biological effects of radiation are presented. The purpose of our studies is to understand the role of liquid water in the radiation damage to biomolecules. We will introduce two research topics: damage process of biomolecules in liquid water induced by secondary electrons ejected from water molecules during fast heavy-ion irradiation, and DNA damage caused by UV absorption into water molecules.
