Atmospheric pressure corona discharge ionization (APCDI) allows us to measure various volatile samples in real time. Proton transfer from H3O+(H2O)n is the major ionization pathway of analytes in the positive-ion mode. Here we found that hydride-abstracted ion [M-H]+ is dominantly formed in APCDI for some samples (M). It was also found that there are three pathways at least to form [M-H]+: (1) abstraction of two hydrogen atoms from protonated molecule [M+H]+, (2) formation of molecular ion M+・ followed by abstraction of one hydrogen atom, and (3) pathways in which ions such as [M+H]+ and M+・ are not involved.
