Steroids could be detected sensitively by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI/MS) upon treatment with Girard’s reagents. In this study, we detect the steroids without derivatization reaction using surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization (SALDI) mass spectrometry with platinum film. Various steroids could be detected directly by the SALDI/MS. Additionally, the SALDI/MS allowed mass spectrometry imaging analysis of steroids on tissue section of animal adrenal glands with simple sample pretreatment.
