The 13C-metablic flux analysis using mass spectrometry was used to investigate metabolic flux distributions in the oleaginous yeast, Yarrowia lipolytica. A time course analysis of cell numbers, medium components and 13C-labeling kinetics of proteinous amino acids and the intracellular metabolites demonstrated that 13C-MFA could be applied for the Y. lipolytica. Flux distributions in the central carbon metabolism suggested that Y. lipolytica during growth phase are specialized both in energy production for cell growth and in production of biomass components.
