Development of in-situ Analysis for Extraterrestrial Particles with Isotope Nanoscope

Lunar and asteroid regolith contains noble gases irradiated by solar wind. These particles have preserved ancient solar wind corresponding to an activity of the ancient Sun. This record can be measured by depth profiling of noble gases into extraterrestrial samples. In this study, we developed measurement procedure for depth profiling of 4He in the lunar ilmenite regolith particle using isotope nanoscope LIMAS. We used indium in order to embed particle in arbitrary angle and position. A reference sample was prepared for comparison, which was a polished ilmenite chip from South Africa. We determined depth profiles for 4He+, 56Fe2+, 48Ti4+, 24Mg2+, and 16O3+. The depth profiles of the major element ions were obtained, of which standard deviations were less than 10%. This standard deviation is similar to those from the reference sample. 4He was also obtained from the uppermost layer of the lunar regolith soil.
