In this study, time-series metabolomics was employed to analyze the metabolic responses in the 4-hydroxy tamoxifen (4-OHT)-treated human breast cancer cell line MCF-7. The results revealed that lipid biosynthesis from citrate was activated by 4-OHT treated apoptotic cells. Inhibition of the metabolic responses inhibited cell apoptosis, indicating that activation of lipogenesis via citrate decrease plays a role in inducing apoptosis.
