Scanning nanoflow rate electrospray ionization for the precision tuning of oxidative modification by strong electric field
Recently we reported a new paradigm of generating nanoESI from large-bore capillaries with a well-controlled flow rate.[1] The concept is based on the well-established spray current–flow rate relationship for steady cone-jet mode under an electric-discharge-free condition. By using precision scanning of emitter voltage, an offline electrospray with a continuously varying flow rate in the nL/min regime had been developed to provide a more quantitative assessment of the nanoflow rate effect on the ionization response. Here we explored the effect of flow rate on different sample systems. An oxidation effect dependent on high-conductivity samples was found. We demonstrated that the oxidation was tunable by the strong electric field and one candidate for the active species was the oxygen atoms generated in the gas phase.
