A new metabolomics database project is underway as part of the Database Integration Coordination Program (DICP) from FY2023. The project, headed by Professor Fumio Matsuda of Osaka University, aims to extend metabolomics research by expanding the data of MassBank, the world standard for measured mass spectra of small molecule compounds. The analytical methods of mass spectrometry have been optimized according to all kinds of conditions, including the type of molecules, different instruments, and sample preparation. In the field of mass spectrometry, it has often required to register a wide variety of meta data about experiments in a repository along with a large amount of spectral data. We have developed data repositories for the proteome (jPOST) and glycomic and glycoproteome (GlycoPOST), and are now developing a repository for metabolomics mass spectrometry data (MB-POST). Aiming to collect raw mass spectral data derived from biological samples, we will build a system with essential functions as a data repository, such as data deposit, browsing, and downloading. The basic structure of the repository database will refer to the jPOST repository that is being developed for the proteome. Finally, we plan to release it as MB-POST in a form that enables collection of metadata optimized for metabolome data. Here, we will give an overview of the repository in the Shin-MassBank project, their characteristics and expected roles.
